Whether you’re looking to save a little money or need a little quantity of cleaner, you can try these DO IT YOURSELF concoctions. It is to be noted that the cleaning mixtures that you can make at home is a combination of certain easily available products in the market like as ammonia, vinegar, bleaching, essential oil etc. etc. These are cambinations of natural products as well as artificially made chemical products which can play a vital role as home made cleaners. However while preparing these cleaners, it is very essential to take safety measures so that you dont hurt or burn yourself. For instance, wear gloves and eye protection when blending cleaners.
Glass-and-window cleaner
Things needed: About 7 pints cold water (108 ounces), 1/2 cup soapy ammonia, 1 pint rubbing alcohol.
Method: Take a bucket and fill it with water. Carefully add the ammonia and rubbing alcohol. Mix well and pour into spray bottles. To identify this clear liquid from other cleaners, tint it with a drop or two of blue food coloring.
Wood Furniture Cleaner
Home made furniture cleaner is much more effective than the ones available in the market which contain hazardous ingredients, like flammable respiratory irritants and butane and the skin and eye irritant d-limonene.
Things Needed: ¼ cup distilled white vinegar or lemon juice, a few drops of jojoba oil or olive oil
Method: Pour the oil and vinegar into a 1-quart spray bottle. Blend well. You can also add a few drops of fragrant essential oil like as sweet eucalyptus, which is a clean fresh summer scent. Spray the cleaner onto wood, wipe over with a damp cloth, and finish drying with a clean, lint-free cloth. This is ideal for cleaning sealed wood.
Things Needed: You can also make a Whiskey Polish for furniture cleaning. You will need 1/4 cup of boiled linseed oil, 1/8 cup white vinegar and 1/8 cup whiskey.
Method: Pour boiled linseed oil into a clean, empty spray bottle. Add white vinegar and whiskey. Put the lid on the spray bottle and shake it well. Spray the homemade wood polish onto a lint-free cloth. Use the cloth to polish the wood furniture.
Things Needed: Sweet Almond Polish. 1/2 cup of Sweet Almond Oil, 1 tablespoon melted beeswax, 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil, 2 tbsp. of red turkey oil and 2 or 3 drops of your favorite essential oil.
Method: Pour sweet almond oil into a clean, empty spray bottle. Add wheat germ oil and melted beeswax. Add red turkey oil and 2 or 3 drops of your favorite essential oil like lemon and cedar. Put the lid on the bottle and shake it well. Spray the polish onto a clean cloth, and use it to wipe your wood furniture. This polish shouldn't be used on heavily-waxed wood or wood with a polypropylene finish.
Things Needed: Lemon Polish; Fresh lemon juice, 2 cups olive oil.
Method: Squeeze the juice of 3-4 fresh lemons in abowl. Pour the fresh lemon juice into a clean, empty spray bottle. Add 2 cups of olive oil. Close the bottle, shake well. Spray on a cloth and polish your your wood furniture.
Silver cleaner
Things needed: 1 piece aluminum foil, 1 to 2 tablespoons baking soda, 2 quarts very hot water
Method: Lay the aluminum foil along the bottom of a glass or plastic container. Place the tarnished silver on top. Sprinkle the silver object with baking soda, and pour very hot water over.Let the object be fully covered with hot water. Soak until bubbles stop, then rinse and polish the silver with a soft cloth. In the chemical reaction, the tarnish breaks down and transfers to the aluminum foil. The foil can be thrown out. You get a shiny silver object this way. This method removes tarnish uniformly. So you cannot use the silver cleaner on antique or intricately patterned silver.
All-purpose cleaner
Things Needed: Ammonia
Method: Soapy ammonia is a very useful cleaning agent. You can use it in place of a commercial all-purpose cleaner for everyday kitchen and bathroom cleaning. Dilute according to the instructions on the container.
Things Needed: 1 tsp. borax, 1/2 tsp. washing soda, 2 Tbsp. vinegar, 1/2 tsp. liquid castile soap , 2 cups very hot water
Method: Add the first four ingredients to a spray bottle, then slowly add the hot water and shake until dry ingredients are dissolved.
